Congressional Briefing on Voter Suppression Hosted by the ADA Education Fund

Tuesday, December 20, 2011
1:00 to 2:30 PM
Senate Visitor Center, Room 201-00
Washington, D.C.

The ADA Education Fund will host a diverse group of speakers to discuss the vital issue of Voter Suppression.

These experts will deliberate on one of the most sacred and important rights of the American people: the right to vote. This right, once reserved for a narrow group of citizens, is now hypothetically enjoyed by all Americans. However recent state legislative actions have raised the specter of creeping disenfranchisement of whole groups of voters.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday in Texas, "We need election systems that are free from fraud, discrimination and partisan influence — and that are more, not less, accessible to the citizens of this country." The 2012 elections are less than a year away, and the right to vote could be critical to both the outcome and the confidence that Americans have in their elected leaders. The photo I.D. and other laws being proposed and passed across the country could prevent millions of Americans from voting.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Robert Brandon, President of the Fair Elections Legal Network
  • Eddie Hailes, Managing Director of the Advancement Project
  • Marcia Johnson-Blanco, Acting Co-Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law
  • Kirin Kennedy, National Field Director for United States Student Association
  • Nicole Austin-Hillery, Director and Counsel of the Brennan Center for Justice

The event is open to the press and public.
